Speed per Gear Calculator

Road speed in each gear at a chosen RPM, from your ratios and tyre size.

How it works

1

Enter tyre & final drive

Tyre size sets rolling circumference; add the final drive ratio.

2

List the gear ratios

Comma-separated, first gear to top.

3

Pick an RPM

Usually the rev limit - see the speed each gear reaches at that RPM.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find max speed in each gear?

For each gear, wheel RPM = engine RPM / (gear ratio x final drive), and speed = wheel RPM x tyre circumference. Enter your rev limit as the RPM to see the speed each gear tops out at.

Why does top gear not reach the rev limiter?

On many cars top gear is geared for economy, so the engine runs out of power before it hits the limiter - the car is drag-limited, not gear-limited, in that gear.

How does tyre size change it?

A taller tyre travels further per turn, raising the speed at any RPM and lowering the engine speed at a given road speed.
