Pops & bangs (also called crackle, burble or a decel/hardcut map) retards ignition and holds fuel on throttle lift-off so unburnt fuel ignites in the exhaust, producing the characteristic cracks, bangs and occasional flames. It's a calibration change in the ECU, adjustable in intensity from a light burble to an aggressive hardcut. Best on petrol turbo cars with a sports exhaust; it adds no power and increases exhaust/EGT stress, so it's an off-road/show feature.
