ECU — ine Control Unit

Definition

The microcontroller-based computer that controls engine fueling, ignition, boost, emissions, and diagnostics. Modern ECUs (EDC17, MED17, MG1) are 32-bit ARM or PowerPC SoCs with 1-8 MB of flash memory holding firmware + calibration.

Why workshops care

ECU calibration is what gets edited during chip tuning. The firmware is rarely touched — instead, tuners modify the calibration tables (maps) that the firmware reads. Softechpro V5 patches calibration tables and recomputes the ECU-specific checksum so the file flashes back without integrity failure.
