Definition
Bosch MD1 (diesel) and MG1 (gasoline) are the post-2018 ECU families using CAN-FD, encrypted firmware (HMAC-SHA1), and bench-mode-only flashing on most variants. Common variants: MG1CS001 (VAG petrol), MD1CP001 / MD1CP004 (PSA / Renault), MEDC17.9 (transition variant).
Why workshops care
MD1/MG1 represent the current state of the art and the hardest ECUs to flash. KESS3 and AutoTuner Master are the typical hardware; Softechpro provides the calibration side. Calibration data is encrypted in the .frf wrapper and decrypted by the tool at load time.
