An ELV Tool works with the Mercedes ELV (Elektrische Lenkradverriegelung) electronic steering lock, also called ESL, used on models such as the W204, W207 and W212. The steering lock's motor and electronics commonly fail, leaving the car unable to start with a 'steering lock' fault. The tool reads and renews the ELV, repairs its data, or personalizes a used/new lock so it pairs with the EZS/EIS and the rest of the security system; it is also used together with steering-lock emulators. Work is done on the bench with the unit removed. Users are Mercedes electronics repairers and locksmiths. Because the ELV is tied into the immobilizer chain, correct pairing data must match the EZS for the vehicle to release the lock and start.
Softechpro does not service steering locks or immobilizer chains, so it does not overlap with the ELV Tool. It is a separate engine-ECU tuning/diagnostics package that a shop would use independently of steering-lock repair.
