ECU Editor / Map Editor
"ECU Decoder" names a class of utility that reads a raw ECU memory dump and decodes identifying and structural information from it: the ECU manufacturer and family, hardware and software part numbers, calibration/version strings, checksum type and location, and sometimes the memory map and compression or encoding used by a particular controller. Tuners and file-service technicians use such tools as a first step, to confirm what they are looking at before choosing a tuning or emissions solution, and to decompress or normalize reads that a bench tool stored in a packed format. Because it is a generic function name rather than a single branded product, capabilities vary by implementation, from simple ID readers to fuller analysis front-ends that hand off to a map editor.
Softechpro includes its own automatic ECU identification step before applying modules, so it overlaps with what an ECU Decoder does and then goes further by acting on the file with emissions/DTC modules and checksum correction across its firmware catalog.
