INCAL is Cummins' distribution of ECM calibration files — the official calibration images and metadata used by INSITE (and Calterm) to reprogram Cummins electronic engines. Delivered as periodic releases, an INCAL package contains the approved calibrations for supported engine families, allowing technicians to update an ECM to a newer or corrected calibration during service. It is not a diagnostic interface itself but the calibration library the Cummins tools draw from. Correct INCAL access is required to flash genuine Cummins calibrations and to apply engineering (ECFG) updates to Cummins ECMs.
CAT ET is the common shorthand for Caterpillar Electronic Technician, Caterpillar's dealer-level diagnostic and programming software for its electronic engines and machines. Using a Cat Communication Adapter, it retrieves active and logged fault and event codes, streams and records live data, executes diagnostic tests and sensor calibrations, sets configurable parameters, and flashes Cat ECMs via WinFlash. It spans Caterpillar on-highway, construction, mining, marine, industrial and generator applications. Technicians treat CAT ET as the essential tool for Caterpillar troubleshooting, ECM reprogramming and equipment configuration wherever OEM-level access to Cat control systems is required.
Cummins Incal (Truck & Off-Highway Diagnostic, Cummins) and CAT ET (Truck & Off-Highway Diagnostic, Caterpillar) compete in the same space, so the choice comes down to coverage, workflow and price for your specific ECUs.
