Definition
UDS (ISO 14229) is the modern diagnostic protocol that replaced KWP2000 / KW1281 / K-Line proprietary protocols. Standardises service IDs (0x10 SessionControl, 0x22 ReadDataByIdentifier, 0x2E WriteDataByIdentifier, 0x34/0x36/0x37 RequestDownload/TransferData/RequestTransferExit for ECU flashing).
Why workshops care
Every modern flasher uses UDS over CAN to read and write ECU calibrations. The flashing sequence (0x10 → 0x27 SecurityAccess → 0x34/0x36/0x37) is identical across Bosch / Siemens / Delphi ECUs from ~2010 onwards.
