KWP2000 — Protocol 2000
Definition
KWP2000 (ISO 14230) is the pre-UDS diagnostic protocol used on K-Line and early CAN ECUs from ~1998 to ~2010. Defined service IDs for diagnostics and ECU flashing similar in spirit to UDS but with simpler header/checksum.
Why workshops care
Older ECUs (EDC15, EDC16, ME7) still need KWP2000-aware flashers. MPPS V21 and many cheap clones speak only KWP2000 — they cannot flash modern UDS-only ECUs (EDC17, MD1, MG1).
