Tool comparison
ODIS Engineering (Offboard Diagnostic Information System, Engineering) is Volkswagen Group's factory-level diagnostic and development software, a more capable counterpart to ODIS Service. Used by VAG engineers, importers and advanced specialists, it provides low-level ECU access: flashing/SVM software updates, parameterization, coding, measurement and access to development-level routines beyond the standard dealer scope. It supports Audi, VW, SEAT, Skoda and related brands over VAS pass-thru interfaces and DoIP on newer vehicles. Because it exposes engineering functions, it is used for module reprogramming, retrofits and deep troubleshooting. ODIS Engineering runs on Windows, requires appropriate VAG online access and licensing for many functions, and is aimed at professional environments rather than casual users.
Consult is Nissan's proprietary onboard diagnostic system and interface, evolving through Consult-I (pre-OBD, 14-pin), Consult-II and Consult-III/plus (the modern factory scan platform). It reads and clears trouble codes, streams live sensor data, performs actuator and active tests, and handles ECU/component programming and configuration across Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. Independent tools and cables — Consult USB interfaces, apps and aftermarket clones — also speak the Consult protocol for diagnostics and datalogging on older Nissans. Tuners often use Consult logging alongside tuning tools to capture factory sensor data. Consult-III plus is the dealer-level platform for current models. It is a diagnostic and programming system, not an engine-tuning or standalone-ECU product.
ODIS Engineering (OEM Diagnostic, Volkswagen Group) and Nissan Consult (OEM Diagnostic, Nissan) compete in the same space, so the choice comes down to coverage, workflow and price for your specific ECUs.
