Nissan Consult vs Mazda IDS

Nissan Consult

OEM Diagnostic
Vendor: Nissan
Platform: Windows + Consult interface cable

Consult is Nissan's proprietary onboard diagnostic system and interface, evolving through Consult-I (pre-OBD, 14-pin), Consult-II and Consult-III/plus (the modern factory scan platform). It reads and clears trouble codes, streams live sensor data, performs actuator and active tests, and handles ECU/component programming and configuration across Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. Independent tools and cables — Consult USB interfaces, apps and aftermarket clones — also speak the Consult protocol for diagnostics and datalogging on older Nissans. Tuners often use Consult logging alongside tuning tools to capture factory sensor data. Consult-III plus is the dealer-level platform for current models. It is a diagnostic and programming system, not an engine-tuning or standalone-ECU product.

Mazda IDS

OEM Diagnostic
Vendor: Mazda Motor Corporation
Platform: Windows + VCM II / J2534

Mazda IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System) is Mazda's factory dealer diagnostic and programming application, historically sharing its architecture with Ford IDS. Running on Windows with a VCM II or compatible J2534 interface, it provides full-system fault diagnosis, live data, bi-directional tests, guided fault-finding, and module reprogramming/configuration for Mazda vehicles — including calibration flashing and setup after control-module replacement. It is used for Mazda-specific procedures such as SkyActiv engine and DPF service routines, key/immobilizer functions, and after-sales campaigns. Independent Mazda specialists rely on it where generic scanners fall short of dealer-level coding and flashing. Mazda has also introduced newer diagnostic platforms such as MDARS for the latest models, but Mazda IDS remains the reference tool across a large range of model years.
