Tool comparison
Consult is Nissan's proprietary onboard diagnostic system and interface, evolving through Consult-I (pre-OBD, 14-pin), Consult-II and Consult-III/plus (the modern factory scan platform). It reads and clears trouble codes, streams live sensor data, performs actuator and active tests, and handles ECU/component programming and configuration across Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. Independent tools and cables — Consult USB interfaces, apps and aftermarket clones — also speak the Consult protocol for diagnostics and datalogging on older Nissans. Tuners often use Consult logging alongside tuning tools to capture factory sensor data. Consult-III plus is the dealer-level platform for current models. It is a diagnostic and programming system, not an engine-tuning or standalone-ECU product.
CAN Clip (often just "Clip") is Renault's official dealer-level diagnostic system for Renault, Dacia, and historically some Renault-Samsung vehicles. It pairs Windows software with the Clip VCI to communicate over K-line and CAN, covering full-system fault diagnosis, live parameters, actuator tests, ECU configuration and programming (SWL/flashing), key/immobilizer procedures, and guided fault-finding across the whole vehicle. Workshops use it for module coding after part replacement, injector coding, DPF and after-treatment routines, and service functions specific to Renault's electrical architecture. Coverage extends across the modern Renault range with regular database updates. It is the reference tool for Renault-group diagnostics and is widely used by both dealers and independent Renault specialists.
Nissan Consult (OEM Diagnostic, Nissan) and CAN Clip (OEM Diagnostic, Renault) compete in the same space, so the choice comes down to coverage, workflow and price for your specific ECUs.
