EVAP Off Explained — Charcoal Canister Delete and Calibration Bypass

When workshops apply EVAP Off, what the system does, legal status, and how Softechpro V5 patches the charcoal-canister monitoring.

What the EVAP system does

EVAP (Evaporative Emissions Control) captures fuel vapours from the fuel tank in a charcoal canister and periodically purges them into the intake manifold to be burnt during combustion. Prevents raw fuel vapours escaping to atmosphere. Mandatory in the US since 1970s and EU since 2001.

The ECU monitors the system via the fuel tank pressure sensor and the purge solenoid duty cycle. When tank pressure doesn't respond as expected during a purge cycle, the ECU stores a P0440-P0457 family DTC.

Why workshops apply EVAP Off

• Charcoal canister failure — saturated or cracked canister stops the system functioning. €150-400 OEM replacement.
• Purge solenoid failure — stuck open valves dump fuel vapour into the intake, screwing lambda control.
• Persistent EVAP DTCs after canister replacement — sometimes the tank-pressure sensor or the leak-detection pump fails next.
• Off-road / track build — entire EVAP system removed for weight + simplicity.
• Aftermarket fuel tank with no EVAP provision (race cell).

What EVAP Off patches

Legal status

EU Regulation 2018/858: EVAP system must remain functional on road-registered vehicles. US EPA Clean Air Act §203: EVAP removal counts as defeat-device. Off-road, motorsport and export markets only.
